What is TFP and TFCD and what they eat

Recently, especially in the conditions of the economic crisis, the term TFP, which in its most simplified form means free-of-charge photography, is increasingly heard among photographers and models. Those who are not connected with the photographic or model business, as a rule, do not know what this abbreviation means. But even those who are familiar with this term, often do not know that this type of photography has its own subtleties and features. This article is designed to shed light on the most frequently asked questions. It is based on the free Wikipedia online e-cyclopaedia, as well as other sources from the world wide web.

Time for Print is a term used in many online photo communities describing an agreement between a model and a photographer. Very often abbreviated as TFP. Instead of paying each other for services, the photographer agrees to provide the model with a certain number of prints of the best photos from the session and a limited license to use these images in exchange for signing the model release.

A variant of this agreement is Time for CD (TFCD). Those. image selection is provided on a CD instead of prints.

There are no “standard” conditions for TFP / TFCD shooting. Each photographer and model may have their own preferences on how to organize and carry out shooting. However, the following conventions are generally accepted:

The model is responsible for the wardrobe and makeup.
The photographer is responsible for the location or studio and equipment rental.
The photographer is responsible for printing the images, recording the CD and shipping costs.
Each member is responsible for their own movement.
The photographer receives a signed release of the model for the use of photographs for portfolio, print or commercial purposes. You can read what a “release of a model” is on the site www.keepup.ru already mentioned by me – there it is called “Receipt of a photomodel”.
The model receives permission to use photographs for its portfolio.
The photographer selects the best photos for retouching and sends the model. I usually give the right to choose the model itself.
The amount of retouching also depends on the photographer. Usually it is 5-10 photos from a standard photo shoot.
The total time for selecting, retouching and transferring photos of a model can vary from one week to two months. For me, this time is determined by the employment in commercial photography.
A make-up artist may require a small payment from the photographer or model to recover the materials spent.
Topics and wardrobe requirements are negotiated before filming by phone, in person or via email.
Some photographers only provide low-resolution images (for posting on the Internet), others provide high-quality images for printing.
A photographer may require that all photos posted on the network contain a watermark (to prevent image theft) and a link to the author.
The model cannot sell photos to any website or send them to magazines / Internet contests, etc. without permission.
If the model is under 18, parents are usually required to attend a photo session and sign a child release.
A photographer can make rules about whether a model can lead a guest to participate in a photo shoot.

An important addition, taken from the site of Anton Tarasov:

Despite the fact that no one pays anyone, yet you should not treat this as a freebie! Just the cost of model time is equal to the cost of the work of the photographer. That is, the model and the photographer WORK! And how well they will do their work and the final result will depend.
Very often, the model and the photographer do not conclude a model release (contract), which is fraught with problems in the future. See the article “Why you need to sign a contract”

Some professional photographers and models use the principle of TFP / TFCD photo shoots for personal projects, but these terms are mostly found among Internet participants and photographic communities. Instead, commercial and modeling agencies, photographers and models participate in trial photo sessions (also called “model casting” or simply “casting”). Castings are different from TFP / TFCD and have several important differences:

As a rule, they are organized through model agencies.
The model does not sign the release of the model, but both the photographer and the model can use the photos for their portfolios.
For filming a model’s book portfolio, the model, as a rule, compensates the photographer, makeup artist and stylist for the time spent at a special rate.
In some cases, the model agency may pay for a photo session for the future earnings of the model.
For the filming of the idea conceived by the photographer, the agency can provide a model at no cost in exchange for some frames for the model portfolio and / or feedback on the model and its capabilities.
Photos are made mostly in a commercial style or as for editorial printing – in the same genre
